I found the film "The Burial" on Amazon recently. Best film EVER! I am so glad that there are people out there like Willie Gary that are fighting for the "little guy" (the oppressed and disadvantaged). God bless Willie Gary!

I want to fight... brief synopsis of what happened dream to nightmare. I had an active building permit (MY GREEN LIGHT) in the city of Des Moines, Iowa 2019 to convert a 4 plex back into a single family unit with my then 501c3 exempt nonprofit organization called Homes 4 My Peeps. Our mission is to provide sustainable and efficient housing solutions to blighted communities. This house was going to be a model that would house and train a framer, electrician, plumber and a gardener to help facilitate others who wanted to get involved in the trade (at-risk youth, vets etc.). The city inspector was directed to remove the building materials ($30,000 of usable building materials have the Home Depot grant receipts for proof). That stopped the progress on the home. I went to the administrative hearing the judge ruled in my favor stating that I not be charged for them coming out and throwing/stealing materials. When asked about the materials I was told I needed to fill out a claim form. I submitted twice and was denied. Then a snowball effect of events and charges were thrown my way. I am listing just a few: My property was declared a nuisance, home then demolished and hit with odd fines. I had a hearing yesterday for a zoning violation involving my shipping container on the property. There is more to this story (Reared in Des Moines, Iowa. Aspiring Architect graduated from Southern University in Baton Rouge, La, comes back home to give back to his community and gets more heart ache than help). It is 2023 the area is being gentrified all I have now is the land, smdh... Kale yes I want to fight! The firms I've called either haven't called me back or can't help time/clients. This is interesting because when I met Willie Gary at an event in Florida and I tried to talk to him, he looked me up and down like I was nasty or something, and then told one of his minions to give me a video tape - of him boasting about how successful he was … after that I thought if that is what money turns you into, I’m good. At the time I wasn’t living Willie Gary style but I did have a condo in Sunny Isles on the ocean and a house in Cutler Ridge so I wasn’t doing too bad. But I will never forget that look he gave me.

No doubt about it! Atty. Gary is an awesome human being and a very brilliant trial lawyer! When he, as the lead attorney, in a burial insurance company case in Jackson, I was a reporter with the Jackson Advocate Newspaper. My assignments included, education, the legislature, courts, prisons and jail. The late-Charles "Mr. T." Tisdales gave me assignment to cover the case, after I was disbarred from practicing. The Hon. James Graves, District Court Judge, at the time, presided over the case and a former friend was one of Gary's ssociates. The case was tried in the Federal Court or Capitol Street, near the Governor Mansion, before a very plaintiff favorable mixed jury. Defendants, owners and officers, appearing during the proceeding were Canadians, a male and very attractive female, whose wealth and class were apparent to all. Willie's closing argument was simply amazing to witness. That defendants were liable was presented to the jurors as a given and Gary spent minimal time arguing the fact. He focused on damages and standing before the court, with a black marker in hand and white sheet of paper hanging from a stand, Gary methodically recorded the Company's profits over the years, the monetary loss suffered by the plaintiff and asked the jurors to return a reasonable judgement, to make whole the plaintiffs for the harm in monetary damages, commensurate with defendants' egregious, willful conduct. If my memory serves me right, the jury was out a couple of hours and returned a judgement of $500 million, which I believe was the highest amount ever recovered in Hinds County, at that time. If not clear to laypersons, it was crystal clear to me, and I am sure, every other attorney in Mississippi and surrounding states, greater participation of blacks in the judicial system as Federal Judges, attorneys and jurors heralded a new day. A crack was created that day in the wall of injustice and segregation in a flagship state of the former Confederate States of America. It was such a pleasure and a lifelong honor to be given the assignment by Mr. T., to witness and report the historical event in The Advocate for the benefit of the paper international subscribers and those who purchased from newsstand throughout various states, particularly in the south. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to reminisce over more than 3-decades, during a time and place, permanently embedded within my mind and spirit. Glad to see The Hon. Willie E. Gary is still going strong, productive and giving so generously to his Alma mater and people. Godspeed to a giant of a man and lawyer.
